Today is World Refugee Day
By by Sonny - 20.06.2012
Every minute eight people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror. According to UNHCR 800,000 new refugees were registered in 2011. That is the highest number in this century. In 2011 3400 new refugees came to Denmark and 1541 people got asylum (www.nydenmark.dk).
War is the cause
The major cause of displacement is war. Prolonged conflicts or instability in places such as Somalia, Iraq or Afghanistan, and unfolding crises in North Africa and the Middle East, are among the contributors to the current world population of almost 44 million forcibly displaced people.
This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention. It is also 60 years since UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, was established.
