Vox Pop - A hot potato!
New Times caught a bus and visited different asylum centres. We asked a few residents a potentially delicate question:
Who do you think should take care of asylum seekers in Denmark?
I think the Red Cross should take care of us, because the Red Cross is doing a good job so far and I think they are handling the asylum seekers well. However, there is a little thing about them. Some just wear the uniform being under the oath of the Red Cross but it is not “in their heart”. Some should be more patient because we are from different backgrounds and have different character from them, so they should bear with us. They are the ones taking care of the centers and they should educate some of the asylum seekers about how to bring up their children and also how to behave and fit into society.
I think the Immigration Service, because they handle our cases and even they decide whether they should send you back to your country. Also when you are sick and you need an operation the Red Cross will tell you we have to wait for the Immigration Service to make a decision. This means that the Immigration Service manage and control everything. So they should take care of us.
I think the Red Cross should take care of asylum seekers because they are the best organisation. They are doing good job. If not because of them some of us would not have a place to stay and may even be dead by now.
I think the police, because some asylum seekers are violent. The Red Cross cannot handle them. They need someone with skill and as we can see right now in camps like Sandholm and Auderød every now and then fighting takes place and Red Cross have to call the police, so the police are the best to take care of asylum seekers.
The kommuner [municipalities, Ed.] have to take care of asylum seekers. The reason why I say that is, it seems the Red Cross work together with the police. Also in the kommuner we could live in flats or houses - not in centres and so we could cook for ourselves for health reason rather than going to cafeteria.
Of course the government should take care of the asylum seekers. Many people are living in camps and suffering lots of pain. I have spend 13 months in camp and Red Cross helps me as much as they can, but the Danish government should give more money to Red Cross, then maybe it will be better.
A co-operation between the Danish government and a charitable organization is the right solution. Red Cross alone can’t be responsible for everything. Red Cross mainly helps people going through disasters, being in bad situations like earthquake, war etc. Therefore it should be another charitable organisation.
